Greater Sudbury Mayor Paul Lefebvre and City Council invite residents to sign a book of condolences for the family and friends of the late Ward 2 City Councillor, Michael Vagnini. The Mayor says he’s encouraging all those who wish to extend their condolences and provide words of comfort to the family and friends of the late Councillor to visit one of the various locations in our community over the coming weeks, the list of which is on the city website.

Residents can sign the book of condolences at the following locations from Wednesday, February 21 until Friday, March 15, 2024:

McClelland Community Centre and Arena
37 Veterans Rd., Copper Cliff

Lively Library and Citizen Service Centre

In other news…

Four wooden structures have been erected at Bell Park by first-year students from the McEwen School of Architecture. The creations are part of an annual effort that has students create shelters for passersby near the normally opened Ramsey Lake skating path.

The snowpack is once again below the historic minimum for this time of year according to reports from the North Bay-Mattawa Conservation Authority. Snow is measured for depth and water equivalence in three locations in the watershed.

A senior’s low-income tax rebate is being created for Cochrane residents. Mayor Peter Politis came up with the idea for the program which has since been approved by council.

Public health units in Sudbury and Algoma to decide next week on a potential merger. Boards discussed the results of the feasibility study in closed session this week.

The Carnival weekend in East Ferris. A series of events including skating and fireworks are going ahead, all at East Ferris Community Centre.

Another cold weather alert is in place for the City of Timmins tonight. The advisories are put out when the weather is expected to drop below -25 C, including Windchill.

The city of Sault Ste Marie will discuss a city-organized ball-drop party at the downtown plaza on New Year’s Eve. The cost? Expected to be around $16,000.

Cobalt council is considering going down to one meeting per month, and leaving out committee of the whole meetings.
